Peach trees are a member of the rose family. It is thought that the first peach trees came from China. The trees had been taken to the Americas by at least the 1600s. These small trees grow in warm climates and produce a juicy, fuzzy-skinned fruit. Peaches with smooth rather than fuzzy skin are called nectarines.

Peaches are known as stone fruit due to the large, hard pit in the center. The pit is a seed. Peaches with easily removed pits are called "freestones," while those that are removed only with difficulty are called "clingstones." Thousands of varieties exist today.

Did you know? Scientists have discovered fossilized peach plants, as well as dried peaches in archaeological sites in ancient Egypt. In ancient China and some other parts of Asia, peach branches were thought to protect against evil.

Peaches often appear in popular culture. In the United States, for example, Georgia is known as the Peach State. A famous example in literature and film is James and Giant Peach, a tale of an orphan who enters a huge, magical peach and has adventures with a number of magical insects.
