Throughout the land of Gielinor exist large fire-breathing beasts called dragons. Foolish mortals that we are, we laugh at the danger that they offer and choose to fight them for the rewards that can be received. This guide offers information about the three types of dragons as well as information on each kind found within. Grab your best fire protection and lets get started!

When attacking dragons, it is recommended to always attack them from afar using either Ranged or Magic depending on the specific Dragon's weakness. This allows you to stay out of their Melee attack range so they primarily attack you with Magic and Dragonfire. In addition to this, you must use either a Dragonfire shield (charged)/Dragonfire shield/Anti-Dragon shield and Antifire OR Super antifire to protect against their dragonfire; the second option being the preferred choice.

The first Dragons introduced to us in Gielinor were the Chromatic dragons. While they are not listed here, this also includes both the King Black Dragon and Queen Black Dragon.

Note that each color of the Chromatic dragons has at least one other variant besides the Normal adult dragon, this excludes White dragons. Some of these are babies while others are a bit more brutal. In general, from weakest to strongest, Chromatic dragons are: Green, Blue, Red, Black, then Celestial Dragons. Below we can see a brief summary of the Chromatic dragons including their combat levels and weaknesses.

When going to fight any one of the Chromatic dragons, it is suggested to use the following Equipment and Supplies.

As most Chromatic dragons are weak to either Arrows or Bolts, it is highly recommended to use a Ranged set up, as shown below. The exceptions to this weakness are Baby black dragons, the boss dragons, and the various chromatic dragons in quests.

Below you will learn information about each of the Chromatic dragons by order of strength. These include bits of information about the dragon type and where they can be found.

The Green dragon class includes 2 types, not including those found within quests. These are the normal adult Green dragon and the Brutal green dragon. Between these two dragons, the Brutal green dragon is by far the more dangerous foe, both because of its level as well as its spawning location: The Wilderness.

  • The Wilderness:
    • There are four locations where they can be found in the Wilderness: level 12-15 (North of the Goblin Village), level 18-24 (East of the Bone Yard and in the Forinthry dungeon), and level 48-52 (South of the Lava Maze). Killing them anywhere within the Wilderness is not recommended due to the obvious risk of player killers. If you do choose to kill them in the Wilderness, then using the location in level 12-15 Wilderness above the Goblin Village is safest due to the close proximity to the Wilderness wall. Always make sure you don't take anything you're not willing to lose.
  • The Chaos Tunnels:
    • The Chaos Tunnels are the safest place, however, you will have to briefly enter the Wilderness to access them. To reach the Green dragon room in the tunnels, cross the Wilderness wall North of the Grand Exchange and head directly North East until you come across a rift. Climb down it and once inside, make your way through the portal to the relevant rooms (21 and 49).
    • Note: Aggressive Baby black dragons will all attack while you are trying to fight the Green Dragons, but they shouldn't be much of a problem if you've brought some food.
    • Partial completion of What Lies Below will enable you to enter the Chaos Tunnels via the Saradomin statue, thus avoiding the Wilderness. Note that this safer route will likely take longer to reach your destination.
  • Ancient Cavern (Brutal Green Dragons):
    • For those who want more of a challenge and more rewarding drops, an alternative to fighting normal Green dragons is Brutal Green Dragons. They can be found in the Ancient Caverns.
    • To be able to access the this area, you must first complete up to the Pyre making part of Barbarian Training. To learn about the cavern they are located in, you must talk to Otto Godblessed about the spirits that have been entrapped inside the cavern. Once inside, Brutal green dragons can be found along the Southern wall.
    • After repairing the Fairy ring, along the Western wall, with 5 Bittercap mushrooms you will be able to teleport to the cavern using fairy code B-J-Q.

The Blue dragon class includes 2 types, not including those found within quests. These are the normal adult Blue dragon and the Baby blue dragon. Between these two dragons, the Blue dragon is the more dangerous foe because of its level.

  • Taverley Dungeon:
    • The best place to kill Blue dragon is in Taverley Dungeon. To access their area, you will need either a Dusty key or 70 Agility. If you find that the main room is too busy, then you can access the resource dungeon to find more dragons (requires 60 Dungeoneering).
  • Heroes' Guild Dungeon:
    • The Heroes' Guild Dungeon has one Blue dragon in a cage.
  • Gu'Tanoth Ogre Enclave:
    • The Ogre Enclave under the ogre city of Gu'Tanoth contains several Blue dragons (requires partial completion of the Watchtower quest to access).
    • Note: Do not attack the Ogre shamans in this dungeon. They are invincible and can hit up to 3,000!

The Red dragon class includes 2 types, not including those found within quests. These are the normal adult Red dragon and the Baby red dragon. Between these two dragons, the Red dragon is the more dangerous foe because of its level.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon is one of only two places where you can find Red dragons. As the other is in the Wilderness, it is recommended to kill then in this location.
  • Red Dragon Isle:
    • Red Dragon Isle is located in level 35-41 Wilderness and very remote. It is not recommended to kill Red dragons here under any circumstances.

The Black dragon class includes 2 types, not including those found within quests. These are the normal adult Black dragon and the Baby black dragon. Between these two dragons, the Black dragon is the more dangerous foe because of its level.

  • Evil Chicken's Lair:
    • The Evil Chicken's Lair in Zanaris is the best place to kill Black dragons due to its close proximity to a bank. Accessing the lair requires completion of the Sir Amik Varze subquest of Recipe for Disaster.
  • Taverley Dungeon:
    • There are two Black dragons located towards the end of Taverley Dungeon. However, if you plan to kill them here then it is recommended to have either 70 or 80 Agility so that you can exit the dungeon quickly to bank via the shortcuts, otherwise it's a long run back and forth.
  • Lava Maze Dungeon:
    • Black dragons can be found in the Lava Maze Dungeon. This location is not recommended to kill Black dragons here as it is dangerous and not at all practical due to its remote location in the deep Wilderness.

Unlike most Chromatic dragons, White dragons were created from experimentation. They initially were made when the Queen black dragon's eggs were mixed with Kerapac's blood. Unfortunately, these white dragons were then taken and imbued with twisted magic that drove them crazy, thus creating the Celestial dragon species of White dragon. Due to over hunting, Celestial dragon are the only version of White dragons that can be found and killed within Gielinor.

  • Dragontooth Island:
    • The only location to find Celestial dragons is on Dragontooth Island. In order to access their location, you must have first completed One of a Kind. On the island you will find a cave entrance to the South, enter the cavern to find the dragons.

Years later the Metal dragons were discovered. The Metal dragons are considerably more challenging to fight than their chromatic cousins due to their higher defence and long-range dragonfire attack. With the right choice of equipment and tactics, it is possible to kill them efficiently and without taking a single hit. In general, from weakest to strongest, Metal dragons are: Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Adamant, then Rune Dragons. Below we can see a brief summary of the Metal dragons including their combat levels and weaknesses.

When going to fight any one of the Metal dragons, it is suggested to use the following Equipment and Supplies.

Using Mage is highly recommended when fighting Metal dragons as they mostly have a weakness to various magic spells and a very high Ranged defence. Rune dragons are the only exception to this with no weaknesses.

Below you will learn information about each of the Metal dragons by order of strength. These include bits of information about the dragon type, where they can be found, and any extra information about their combat as necessary.

Bronze dragons are the weakest of the Metal dragons and have the lowest amount of spawns of any dragon type. Despite being of the Metallic dragon variety, you will actually find this dragon quite weak; but they still should not be underestimated. Due to their relatively poor drops, and inability to drop the Draconic visage, these dragons are not often fought.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon is one of only two places where you can find these dragons and is the easier location to reach. While the nearby Wild dogs may not pose a problem, there is a Black demon swaggering around the area that may become a bit of an annoyance.
  • The Chaos Tunnels:
    • The Chaos Tunnels are the second location. Two are found near the Earth warriors while the last one is near the Fire elementals. Rooms 6 and 3 respectively on our map.

Iron dragons are the next weakest Metal dragon. After completion of Love Story, with 97 Construction players can build a dungeon pit and place an Iron dragon inside for 7,500,000 coins. Note that the dragon will be level 112, it not award any experience if killed, nor will it count toward completion of a task.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon contains two locations inside with Iron dragons. The first is in the South Eastern corner of the main floor.
    • The second location is found inside a Resource dungeon. Here, several more of these dragons can be found, but 80 Dungeoneering is needed to access it.
  • Fortress of Ghorrok:
    • The Ghorrock location requires The Temple at Senntisten in order to access. Getting to the temple can be achieved several ways: the easiest ways to reach it are by teleporting to the Frozen Waste Plateau using the Ghorrock Teleport spell (requires 95 Magic and completion of Desert Treasure) or teleporting to the Glacor Cave (Fairy ring code: D-K-Q). Another option is teleporting to the Trollweis Hunter area (fairy ring code: D-K-S), taking the canoe to the Mahjarrat Ritual Site cavern, and then passing the ice block to the East.
  • Kuradal's Dungeon:
    • Kuradal's Dungeon is likely the least used location for killing Iron dragons in general as the location requires you to have an Iron dragon task assigned to you to use. As such, if you happen to have one assigned by Kuradal or Morvran it is a good idea to use this location.

Steel dragons are the last of the "weak" metal dragons. They are found in the same locations as Iron dragons. Also similar to Iron dragons, Steel dragons can be added to your Player-Owned House. The difference is that to add this dragon (to your Treasure room) you only need 95 Construction, but will have to pay 10,0000,000 coins.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon contains two locations inside with Steel dragons. The first is in the South Eastern corner of the main floor.
    • The second location is found inside a Resource dungeon. Here, several more of these dragons can be found, but 80 Dungeoneering is needed to access it.

Here is where Metal dragons actually begin to get tough as they are the first to use all three sides of the combat triangle. While being similar to other dragons in many ways, Mithril dragons are the only dragons that drop both Ancient pages and Chewed bones as well as being the only dragon type that does not drop Dragon platelegs or plateskirts; plus they are one of only 2 dragon types that drop the Dragon full helm.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon only contains Mithril dragons within a Resource dungeon. Here, several of these dragons can be found, but 80 Dungeoneering is needed to access it.
  • Ancient Cavern:
    • To be able to access the Ancient Caverns, you must first complete up to the Pyre making part of Barbarian Training. To learn about the cavern they are located in, you must talk to Otto Godblessed about the spirits that have been entrapped inside the cavern. Once inside, you will need to climb the stairs near the Eastern wall. Here you will find 7 Mithril dragons total.
    • After repairing the Fairy ring, along the Western wall, with 5 Bittercap mushrooms you will be able to teleport to the cavern using fairy code B-J-Q.

Adamant dragons are the result of yet another Dragonkin experiment, this one performed by a disciple of Kerapac. In addition to the normal drops, Adamant dragons are the second type of dragon to drop the Dragon full helm as well as being the weakest dragon type that drops a specific type of dragon bones - Hardened dragon bones. Similar to Mithril dragons, Adamant dragons also has several text based drops, though these take the form of journals as opposed to individual pages.

  • Brimhaven Dungeon:
    • Brimhaven dungeon only contains Adamant dragons within a Resource dungeon. Here, several of these dragons can be found, but 80 Dungeoneering is needed to access it.
  • Dragonkin Lair:
    • The Dragonkin Lair is accessed via the Ancient Caverns and found near Kuradal. To access the main cavern, you must first complete up to the Pyre making part of Barbarian Training. To learn about the cavern they are located in, you must talk to Otto Godblessed about the spirits that have been entrapped inside the cavern. Once inside, you will need to climb the stairs near the Eastern wall. Here you will find 7 Mithril dragons total.

Rune dragons are the toughest Metal dragon to fight due to the fact that they have three phases and no weakness. In addition to that, they use all three sides of the combat triangle like Adamant and Mithril dragons. They also have an Elite form that may appear while there.

  • Mount Firewake:
    • Accessed via the World Gate. Right-click and choose Kethsi.
    • Requires completion of Ritual of the Mahjarrat and Fate of the Gods to access.

The phases are as follows:

  • Armored Phase
    • 68,250 lifepoints
    • Dragonbane is highly recommended during this phase as all other attacks (of any type) are greatly reduced.
  • Flying Phase
    • 45,045 lifepoints
    • Attacks during the transition between Phases is reduced by 10%.
    • Dragon will fly, thus making Melee attacks ineffective. However, Dragonbane is no longer necessary to achieve full attack strength.
    • No longer uses Melee attacks and standard dragonfire is replaced by an enhanced version. This attack cannot be fully blocked by potions; protect/deflect magic is recommended to lower the hit to 450.
  • Enrage Phase
    • 22,522 lifepoints.
    • Attacks during the transition between Phases is reduced by 10%.
    • Melee attacks are once again effective.
    • Resumes use of standard dragon fire and Melee attacks.
    • Attack strength will increase with each hit.

Occasionally, when killing Rune dragons in Kethsi, an Elite rune dragon may appear. These are much stronger versions of the normal Rune dragon that have almost double the health. They are particularly prone to appearing when on task, though it is possible both for them to appear while not on task or to not appear when on one. Despite having the same phases/mechanics as the above, the list will be repeated with the differences adjusted.

  • Armored Phase
    • 105,188 lifepoints
    • Dragonbane is highly recommended during this phase as all other attacks (of any type) are greatly reduced.
  • Flying Phase
    • 69,424 lifepoints
    • Attacks during the transition between Phases is reduced by 10%.
    • Dragon will fly, thus making Melee attacks ineffective. However, Dragonbane is no longer necessary to achieve full attack strength.
    • No longer uses Melee attacks and standard dragonfire is replaced by an enhanced version. This attack cannot be fully blocked by potions; protect/deflect magic is recommended to lower the hit to 450.
  • Enrage Phase
    • 34,712 lifepoints.
    • Attacks during the transition between Phases is reduced by 10%.
    • Melee attacks are once again effective.
    • Resumes use of standard dragon fire and Melee attacks.
    • Attack strength will increase with each hit.

Beyond this, the only other differences between normal and Elite rune dragons is that Elite dragons of course have superior drops and that they will only fight the person it has appeared for unless they have left the area or have not attacked it within 3 minutes. if either of those conditions have been met, other players in the area are free to attack it.

Most recently, the people of Gielinor have encountered Gemstone dragons. Unlike the dragons before them, these ones require a specific Slayer level, payment to kill, and are all locked within an area only accessible to some.

In general, from weakest to strongest, Gemstone dragons are: Dragonstone, Onyx, then Hydrix. Below we can see a brief summary of the Gemstone dragons including their combat levels and weaknesses.

Below you will learn information about each of the Gemstone dragons by order of strength. As all gemstone dragons are found in the same location, explained in a moment, each section will give a brief bit of information before explaining their specific fight particularities.

As mentioned a moment ago, all Gemstone dragons are located in the same area. This is the Gemstone Dragon Dungeon. Access to this location requires completion of the Hard Karamja tasks. Equip your Karamja 3 (or Karamja 4) gloves and climb down the ladder in the Gemstone mine of Shilo Village.

North of your current location you will see Kelhar. If you are not on a task you will need to pay for each dragon killed. For each of the uncut gemstones you pay Kelhar, you will be able to kill a certain number of any type Gemstone dragon. You can purchase up to 6,000 kills at a given time.

Uncut gem Kills per gem
Dragonstone 2
Onyx 400
Incomplete hydrix 4,000

Once you have paid Kelhar, or not if you are on task, climb down the ladder near him before finding and killing the desired type of Gemstone dragon.

Note that if you have paid gem(s) to Kelhar and then get a task, none of your payment will be consumed until after it has been completed.

Dragonstone dragons are the first Gemstone dragons you will encounter in the cavern. There are 7 of them spaced about the room. Note that these dragons require 95 Slayer in order to damage them.

These dragons can attack using Magic, Melee, and dragonfire. As such it is suggested to fight them from a distance with protect/deflect from Magic on, unless you wish to reduce the chance of them performing their easily avoidable special. If this is the case, you will want to stand within Melee distance.

Occasionally while fighting them, they will perform a special attack. This consists of of them spitting crystals at you which become a 3X3 area of attack which can easily be avoided by moving out of the way; larger distances between you and your target is suggested to give you more time to move. When hit, you will sustain about 4,500 damage (without protect/deflect) and the timer on your Antifire potion will be reduced by half. It is possible to use Resonance to heal from their special attack, however, you will still lose the time from your active potion. In a similar fashion, you can use Devotion with protect/deflect from Magic to block the damage and still lose the potion time. As the effects of the Special attack cannot be avoided, it is highly suggested to simply move out of the way when you see the attack, or to stand within Melee distance to discourage it from occurring.

Onyx dragons are the next Gemstone dragons you will encounter in the cavern. There are 6 of them spaced about the room. Note that these dragons require 98 Slayer in order to damage them.

These dragons can attack using Magic, Melee, and dragonfire. As such it is suggested to fight them from a distance with protect/deflect from Magic on, unless you wish to reduce the chance of them performing their easily avoidable special. If this is the case, you will want to stand within Melee distance.

Hydrix dragons are the last Gemstone dragons you will encounter in the cavern unless you take the short cut from the entrance chamber (94 Agility). There are 6 of them spaced about the room. Note that these dragons require 101 Slayer in order to damage them.

These dragons can attack using Magic, Melee, and dragonfire. As such it is suggested to fight them from a distance with protect/deflect from Magic on, unless you wish to reduce the chance of them performing their easily avoidable special. If this is the case, you will want to stand within Melee distance.

When hit, you will sustain about 3,900 damage (without protect/deflect) and it will reduce your adrenaline to zero as well as reduce your adrenaline gain for several seconds. It is possible to use Resonance to heal from their special attack, however, you will still suffer from the adrenaline effects. In a similar fashion, you can use Devotion with protect/deflect from Magic to block the damage and still effects your adrenaline. As the effects of the Special attack cannot be avoided, it is highly suggested to simply move out of the way when you see the attack, or to stand within Melee distance to discourage it from occurring.

While fighting any one of the Gemstone dragons, it is possible to receive a piece of Gemstone armor as a drop. These pieces require 80 Defence in order to equip and can be used with any style of weapon as it is a hybrid armor. Be aware that the main benefit of this armor lies within its ability to be charged by uncut gems to enable specific effects.

The gems and their associated effects are listed below.

Uncut gem Effect Charges per gem
Dragonstone 14% extra damage with Dragon bolts (e), Onyx bolts (e), or Ascendri bolts (e) 10
Onyx Heals 25% of pre-modifier attack maximum 100
Incomplete hydrix Additional 1% extra adrenaline per auto or ability used for 15 seconds 1,000

You must be wearing at least 3 pieces of the Gemstone armor set to obtain the chance of activating the associated effect. Equipping more pieces increases the chance of the effect activating. When wearing the full set, you will have about 3.6 activations per minute of the effect.
